The Art of Belonging

Cadie’s Journey

“For me, belonging really means finding where you fit. I didn’t always have an environment or friends that made me feel that I belonged. But, as I grow as a person, I am finding my connection in the world.”

Cadie shares this reflection after participating in a collaborative art program at The Hyde Collection in Glens Falls, NY. Over the last two years, Cadie has found a strong connection with teachers and fellow students at The Hyde, where she is building relationships and her blossoming artistry is unfolding.

For Cadie, this opportunity has become more than an art class—it’s a symbol of belonging. She explains how valued she feels by both peers and teachers, especially seeing her work displayed at The Hyde for several weeks. “Sometimes you go places and feel a little uncomfortable initially. Now that I have found my creative self, I know I belong wherever I go.” Her artwork explores creative self-expression and personal history, highlighting her unique identity and limitless potential.

Personal Growth

Taking part in The Hyde’s art class brought something new into Cadie’s life, where she felt her “creative juices” flowing like never before. Guided by her skilled teachers, Janek Palat and Toni Nastasi, she explored her newfound talents and discovered a passion for art; a passion for which she simply cannot get enough.

I love seeing what I can create, as well as what art creates within me”. Through art, Cadie shares that she can destress on the hard days, finding calm and peace when drawing. Cadie also shares that, because of her time with the Hyde art classes, her confidence in discussing and interpreting art has grown. “A few years ago, I wouldn’t even know how to describe a piece of art in the Hyde, and then recently I found myself speaking proficiently about a piece. I felt like I was channeling so many people in my life, like I had tapped into something”.

 Building Relationships

Cadie’s time at The Hyde has also brought new friendships into her life. She explains that a few classmates and she started chatting over art and became fast friends. They now spend time together outside of class going to the movies, going bowling, and having picnics together.

Her teachers, both attentive and encouraging, have helped her translate ideas into creations, where she feels free to explore her personal thoughts, influences, and inspirations. She also learned a great deal from other participants as she observed the different ways they understand art. “We all perceive art in a different way. I enjoy how art helps me get to know and understand people.”

This opportunity has brought a new element of connection and community into Cadie’s life. Not only has she discovered her creative abilities, but she has also found a supportive community that has enhanced her life. This solidifies the importance of art in finding commonality amongst diverse people, helping them form bonds unlikely without this shared experience.

We All Belong

“I want people to know it’s ok to feel what you feel when you’re feeling a sense of not belonging. But be strong and look into finding ways to connect with others—a common ground. Push a little out of your comfort zone. I did this, and now an interest has become a passion.” Cadie shares that when you find that connection, your sense of belonging will grow.

Cadie also encourages the community at large to continue to grow inclusive opportunities where people of all abilities can find a sense of belonging. She knows firsthand the power of being supported to explore interests and eventually finding the right fit and inspiration. “I’ve enjoyed this class for two years now, and I want more. I find that people are so interested and want to hear about how I found something that I love. It perpetuates the feeling that I Belong. We All Belong and want the same things”.

Cadie’s words are a powerful reminder that when we make space for everyone to participate, to express themselves, and to connect, we help build a world where everyone can truly say, “I Belong”.
