People with intellectual and developmental disabilities are increasingly shaping their own lives through Supported Decision-Making; finally an approach that legally affirms their right to make independent choices while receiving support only when they want it. Through this model, people build trusted circles of support who help them understand options, weigh information, and move forward with confidence.
Supported Decision-Making Facilitators play a key role in supporting the person to explore potential outcomes without diminishing their voice or control. This represents a significant shift from traditional guardianship systems, where decisions are made on someone’s behalf. Through Supported Decision Making, people are equipped with the information, resources, and support they need to make informed decisions about things such as their health, housing, contracts, and selecting services and programs that align with their personal goals.
This person-centered approach strengthens autonomy, expands opportunity, and ensures that the people served remain at the center of every decision that shapes their lives.
As the designated statewide provider of SDM, AIM Services will play a central role in bringing this vision to life. AIM will establish a structured and replicable SDM model for use across New York State, work with people to develop SDMAs, and help ensure that every person is afforded the respect, independence, and full legal recognition when making decisions about their lives.
